Raw Luxury
Global awareness of depleting resources inspires
us to re-evaluate raw materials and our definition
of what is desirable.
Materials that are perhaps not considered
as precious are reconsidered and given new
value based on the ways in which they are
treated. Craftsmanship is explored in new
ways – artisanal is updated, while there’s a new
appreciation of the imperfect.
A natural raw aesthetic in food becomes
more desirable as consumers become aware
of genetic modification and corruption in the
food chain. Imperfection is now respected and
desirable, such as purple carrots and knobbly
veg, while ignored products such as chia,
quinoa and freekah become more popular.

Dutch designer Joost Gehem’s project,
Transformation and Distribution Centre
for Abandoned Household Items, takes raw
materials from chairs, carpets and blinds from
house clearances and grinds them down to
turn into objects of desire. Gehem is currently
working on refining the process and planning
a new line of products.
